The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is one of the world's leading institutions studying the development, dynamics, norms, and governance of the internet. Its annual fellowship programme brings together a diverse cohort of researchers, practitioners, lawyers, technologists, policymakers, and journalists to collaborate, share expertise, and advance understanding of how the internet shapes society.
What You Get
Berkman Klein Fellows are affiliated with Harvard University for the duration of their fellowship. They gain access to Harvard's academic resources, library, and research community; participate in regular workshops, seminars, and faculty dinners; receive workspace at the center; and join a network of over 500 past and current fellows from more than 60 countries. The fellowship is primarily residential, though arrangements for remote participation may be available in some cases.
Fellowship Tracks
The center offers several fellowship tracks: the full Academic Year fellowship (September 2026 to August 2027), semester-only options, and project-based affiliations. International fellows can apply for either or both periods. The center works with the Harvard International Office to support visa paperwork for eligible international fellows.
Who Should Apply
The fellowship is designed for mid-career professionals and academics working on questions at the intersection of the internet and society — including AI governance, digital rights, online speech, cybersecurity policy, platform accountability, privacy law, and the social impact of technology. Prior fellows include senior government officials, award-winning journalists, leading academics, and founders of influential technology policy organisations.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted through the Berkman Klein Center website at cyber.harvard.edu. The application requires a description of your proposed fellowship project, a CV, writing samples, and letters of recommendation. There is no formal deadline posted — the center accepts applications on a rolling basis and encourages prospective fellows to reach out informally before submitting a full application.
Why This Fellowship Matters
At a moment when questions about AI, platform power, misinformation, and digital rights are shaping policy worldwide, the Berkman Klein Center is at the centre of the most important debates. A fellowship here connects you directly to the Harvard faculty, government advisers, and global civil society leaders who are writing the rules of the digital world.
